With just over two months to go Aquaman received it’s second trailer this morning. An extended trailer showing much more of what this movie hopes to deliver. That being eye laser chases, awesome underwater battles, and a healthy dose of humor!

What we know

This trailer gives us a little more of a glimpse at Arthur’s(Jason Momoa) background while sharing some stunning visuals that include some super colorful underwater battle scenes. The cast is solid, featuring not only Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) as the titular character full of muscle and wit, but a whole host of other well known actors/actresses.

Check out this list pulled from the Warner Bros Website:

Amber Heard (Justice League, Magic Mike XXL) as Mera, a firece warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man 2) as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring films, Watchmen) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (upcoming Baywatch, Netflix’s The Get Down) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Lion) as Arthur’s mom, Atlanna; as well as Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) as Captain Murk, Atlantean Commando; and Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Green Lantern) as Arthur’s dad, Tom Curry.

Pretty dang impressive cast. But a star studded cast doesn’t always mean blockbuster hit.

The Promising

While Aquaman is traditionally a character picked on as being the most useless member of the Justice League, he actually SOME potential for a good story. Especially if used in a similar way as Ant-Man over at Marvel. The slightly more light-hearted, fun take on an exceptionally dark DC movie universe makes total sense.

Let’s not overlook the fact that since most people seem to already be writing this movie off as garbage, expectations will likely be low for most viewers. A factor that could work in this movies favor if it delivers the fun, light-hearted action it’s promising. There is plenty of room for viewers to walk out telling all of their friends how much fun it was and how much better it was than they anticipated.

Having a hero in the DC Movie Universe that is a total bad-a** while also being very funny, someone viewers can relate to in some way, could be a recipe for complete success.

The Concern

Future potential. Look, I’m not claiming to be an Aquaman comic expert. BUT, I worry that the character may not have enough interesting solo stories to be able to carry more than a single movie. I know there are a ton of stories in the source material, but will they feel too familiar after this first film?

With all the recent shake-ups and news coming out of the DC movie universe who knows what we are going to get out of this film. It could be a smash hit similar to Wonder Woman or a total dud like Justice League. In fairness though, I enjoyed Justice League even though I won’t claim it was the best movie ever.

The other big concern is that this movie goes too heavy on the bro humor, making the whole thing feel like one long joke. If they can mix the action and tense dramatic scenes with just enough humor to keep it from being another super colorful yet dark and gritty DC film, things should work out just fine.

Is it time to be excited about this movie?

This is a perfect wait and see approach situation if there ever was one. I’m excited enough that I’ll go see it, curiosity more than excitement maybe. However, I’m keeping expectations fairly low. This feels like a movie that could be a fun, kick back and leave your brain at the door, enjoy the silly ride kind of movie.

And there is nothing wrong with that at all.
